Being an international break weekend we look at League Two for our weekend match. This is SALFORD CITY v MK DONS, being played at The Peninsula Stadium, on Saturday.

The clubs have met just five times previously, with Salford winning 2 and MK 3, no draws. The Ammies (Salford City) were promoted into the EFL in 2019, and have remained in League Two since, but hadn’t met The Dons until they were relegated from League One in 2023.

The first meeting was on 25th November 2023 with City playing at home. The 2508 attendees saw The Dons take the lead through Dean in the 10th minute. N’Mai replied for The Ammies in the 36th minute and the home team went ahead through Watson just before the break. Second half saw the visitors take control with Tomlinson scoring a double in the 50th and 72nd minutes and Harrison adding another in the 88th. Final result 2-4.

The return match that season at Stadium MK took place on 9th March 2024. Smith opened the scoring for Salford in the 10th minute. However the home team responded with goals from Lofthouse and Gilbey in the 27th and 31st minute. To add to the visitors woe, Tezgel scored an own goal on the stroke of half time. No goals second half, so a final result of 3-1. That season saw MK Dons reach the play offs and Salford City finish 20th.

The next season, 2024-2025, saw their first meeting again at The Ammies home, on 2nd September 2024. The attendance of 2227 saw Okoronkwa score the only goal of the match for the home team in the 42nd minute. The 1-0 result was the first win for Salford between the clubs.

Their second meeting of the season at Stadium MK saw City do the double over Dons with another 1-0 win. This was scored by Adelakun in the 34th minute. That season saw Salford City ending in 8th place and MK Dons 19th.

Their last meeting was on 15th November 2025 with The Dons being the hosts. Whilst The Ammies had most possession it was The Dons who took the spoils. It took them to the second minute of first half extra time for them to score the opening goal through Mendez-Laing and again in the fourth minute of extra time in the second half. This goal was scored by Patterson. Final result 2-0.

Before this coming latest match both teams are in exciting positions. MK Dons are currently in 2nd, an automatic place position and Salford City are in a playoff position in 6th. With just seven matches to be played this League season, a win is important to both. The managers, Karl Robinson (who previously managed the visitors) and Paul Warne, will undoubtedly be geeing up their players for this match and it will be interesting to see the result.

An interesting point is that striker Callum Hendry played for The Ammies up until July 2024. Where did he move to ? MK Dons!!! He has since moved to Motherwell.

FA Cup weekend. LIVERPOOL v BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION is one of the very few all PL fixtures. This match will be played on Saturday at 8pm. The clubs have met just 44 times previously, playing each other in six FA Cup fixtures.

The first cup meeting was on 1st February 1908 and played at Anfield, in front of a 36000 crowd. Albion were playing in the Southern League at that time, so produced a miracle to draw 1-1. Amazingly Brighton took the lead through a penalty in the 43rd minute, scored by Jack Hall. They then hung on until the 81st minute, when John Cox scored. The replay at the iconic Goldstone Ground was not so happy for the Sussex club. The result between a League and non League teams ended as would be expected. Liverpool scored in the 25th minute (Bradley) the 80th minute (also Bradley) and 85th minute (Cox). End result 0-3. The cup was won by Wolves that season.

Their next meeting in the Cup was the most significant for Albion. This was again played at Anfield on 20th February 1983. Sitting bottom of the old League Division One the Seagulls travelled to Merseyside with apprehension as the Reds had played sixty three home matches without defeat. Unbelievably Brighton took the lead in the 32nd minute, through Gerry Ryan. In the 67th minute much to Albion’s dismay, Craig Johnston equalised. Joy again for the Seagulls a minute later when the lead was restored by ex Red, Jimmy Case. More heart in mouth when Liverpool’s Phil Neal stepped up to the penalty spot. He missed. Joy for Albion as they ended up 2-1 winners. Ironically, at this time Albion’s manager was an ex Red player, Jimmy Melia. The Seagulls then marched all the way to the final when they initially drew 2-2 with Manchester United. The replay was one way with the Red Devil’s winning 4-0.

Fate drew the two clubs together the next season. They met this time at the Goldstone Ground on 29th January 1984. Again, Albion, who were now in Division Two, were not expected to beat the eventual season’s League Champions but they did. Gerry Ryan got the first goal in the 57th minute with Terry Connor immediately scoring the second in the 58th minute. Unfortunately for the Reds, Everton went on to win the Cup that season.

On 26th January 1991 another Cup meeting between the clubs. Albion who were still in Division Two travelled to Anfield. The gate of 32670 saw the Reds take the lead in the 48th minute through Ian Rush, who then doubled the lead in the 55th minute. However, the Seagulls were not finished. Mike Small pounced in the 72nd minute followed by John Byrne two minutes later. Ended 2-2. The replay was on the 30th January at The Goldstone Ground. Steve McMahon opened the scoring for the visiting team in the 10th minute with Mike Small equalising in the 36th minute. Finishing 1-1 extra time was played. John Byrne shot Albion ahead in the 98th minute but joy did not last. Ian Rush and Steve McMahon broke the home fans by scoring in the 106th and 114th minutes. The majority of the 14392 crown went home disappointed but proud of their team. The winners of the Cup that season was Tottenham Hotspur.

February 19th 2012 saw Albion travel again to Merseyside for a Cup fixture. Not so close this time for the Seagulls. Liverpool won through goals by Skrtel 5th minute, Bridcutt 44th minute (own goal), Carroll 57th minute, Gerrard 71st minute, Dunk 74th minute (own goal), and Suarez 85th minute. Albion’s only response was by Lua Lua whose 17th minute goal had at that time levelled the score. And so, a 6-1 thumping. The Reds did actually reach the final that season but were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea.

The last Cup meeting between the club’s was played at Albion’s American Express Stadium (Amex) on 29th January 2023. Both were now Premier League clubs, so on a more equal footing. Liverpool arrived at the South Coast as current FA Cup holders. Normal service seemed to be in play when the Reds took the lead through Harvey Elliott in the 30th minute. However, Brighton were made of sterner stuff under the management of Roberto De Zerbi. Lewis Dunk got an equaliser in the 39th minute and Kaoru Mitoma popped up in the second minute of extra time to score the winner. The final was won by Manchester City, the first time the Manchester clubs had met in a final.

Come Saturday evening they will be starting all over again.
